Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives
As in Russian, in English adjectives (with a certain generalized meaning) can have formal indicators marking the degree of comparison. Of such forms three. An adjective form that expresses the quality of an object or person without regard to other objects or persons, is called a positive degree (the positive degree). In this form, adjectives are given in the dictionary. When comparing two objects (persons) the adjective is used in a comparative degree (the comparative degree). If more than two objects (faces) are compared, then one of them shows the highest degree of quality, which is expressed by the form superlative degree:
Student A is tall. Student B is taller. Student C is the tallest. There are two ways to form degrees of comparison: synthetic - using the suffixes -er (comparative degree) and -est (superlative degree) and analytical - by adding additional elements - more (for a comparative degree) and the most (for an excellent one); shape itself the adjective remains unchanged. These two methods, when forming the degrees of comparison, are not applied arbitrarily, but in accordance with a certain principle.Monosyllabic (and some disyllabic) adjectives form degrees of comparison in a synthetic way, and polysyllabic (and most disyllabic) - analytical:
high - higher - the highest; interesting - more interesting - the most interesting.
It should be remembered that the noun with which the adjective is associated with the superlative is used with the definite article, since the very meaning of the superlative degree is due to its restrictive function.
