The Past Continuous Tense

<i>The verb form in the past continued tense has
model I (he, she, it) was doing, we (you, they) were doing. This
form indicates that the action was in progress
at a certain moment in the past. This moment can
be represented by a circumstance of time, another action
in the past or suspected by the situation:
<br> That time yesterday my husband was working in the garden.
<br> He was digging.
The verb form was working and was digging indicates that
a certain person was in the process of the specified activity; this person started to work in the garden until a certain point and did not finish the work at that point. In this sense, such
the action is considered unfinished (unfinished).
The moment in the past in this case can be expressed by another
past action in the structure of the relative clause:
<br> When you phoned me, I was watching TV.
<br> (I was in the middle of doing this.)
Unlike past continued past simple
denotes a completed action - it was started and completed.
